Thought for the Day
I'm currently reading Jedediah Purdy's book Being America: Liberty, Commerce, and Violence in an American World and thought I would share a small section from the text:
What we [Americans -- meaning the nation of people rather than individual Americans] do well will speak for itself, but what we advertise will be turned against us in the form of resentment and charges of hypocrisy. It is better not to speak too loudly of one's own principles.... Our greatest power is in our choice of what we display: principle, generosity, and modesty, or opportunism, selfishness, and the pretense to innocence. Our actions teach others what to expect from the future.
