I just want to point out…
we are on our way to 95+ degrees today and I am sitting here wearing a fleece jacket. It is so freaking cold in the office that we have to go outside just to warm up.
That is all... just needed to share.
I’m so excited!
Okay, so the other day I was finally able to bring home a PowerMac G4 from work. Waiting on the kitchen table when I walked in the door was the latest version of the Mac OS X, Tiger. With that hurdle crossed, I was trying to figure out what to do with regards to the monitor and network connection for my Mac, because I already have a Dell tower with a wireless PC card in my room and just one small 15" monitor. I could simply disconnect the monitor cable and connect it to the other machine whenever I wanted to switch computers, but that would be a pain. And there was still nothing to be done with regards to the internet connection for my Mac.
Monday I was surfing the internet and came across an incredible deal that would solve one of my problems. Newegg.com had a great price on a 19" LCD monitor that included a $50 rebate. The monitor had both VGA and a DVI inputs, so that made me believe I could connect it to both of my computers at once. My willpower being weaker than normal due to the facts that it was Monday and I was recovering from the sunburn I had received the day before, I ordered the monitor. Unbelievably, it arrived at work via FedEx this morning after a quick trip from Memphis.
With that problem solved, I still didn't know what to do about the internet connection. So I was IMing with Erik today and he suggested that I simply use a crossover cable to connect the two machines and use Internet Connection Sharing to access the internet from both computers. I thought that was a great idea and couldn't believe I hadn't thought of it first, but that's what having smart friends is for: thinking of things that you should have. Well, I got home and connected my monitor to both machines (it is REALLLY cool) and then set out to figuring out how to enable ICS.
Several failed attempts later, I came across this great post on a broadband forum and everything clicked. All I had to do was bridge the wired NIC card and wireless card, establish a static IP address for that bridged connection and then create another static IP address for my Mac and... voila! I had internet access on all machines! (Never, ever mess with those supposedly helpful, easy wizards embedded within Windows... they never do what you want them to do.) This means I am currently downloading the latest updates to the Mac... can you believe they already have version 10.4.1 realeased?! Steve Jobs is getting almost as bad as Bill Gates... okay, I take that back. But Tiger was just released a few weeks ago and they already have an update. Oh well, such is the life of technology today.
Well, I suppose I should go to bed... that is if I can settle down and pull myself away from this great new setup.
Happy last two days of the work week to y'all!
